Tárcoles, a landscape to remember in June

Located on the northern outskirts of the province of Puntarenas, Tárcoles is full of exotic and beautiful fauna. The intimidating American Crocodiles have become one of the main attractions for domestic and foreign tourists, who from the Tárcoles River Bridge or on a crocodile tour through the marshes, are stunned by their size.

The  Tárcoles River, known as the Rio Grande de Tárcoles, is nearly 70 miles long and part of the habitat of the American Crocodile with the river’s mouth hosting numerous otherbird and animal species. Among the many resident herons, one can fine the boot peak and  the tiger heron. Other birds in the area include; alcaraván dara, the mangrove canary and the dwarf martin-fisherman.

The area was inhabited in pre-Columbian times by natives of the ethnic, Kingdom of Huetar of the West. At the beginning of the Conquest the main chieftain was Garabito, who gave origin to the name of the canton, an area of natural beauty that includes forests, mangroves and lagoons. The area serves as a rich nesting area for many birds, among them the spectacular Red Macaw or Red Lapa (Ara Macao) and the unparalleled Spatula Rosada, among many others.

At the bottom of the Tárcoles River valley are natural pools, which invite a relaxing swim. There you will find a campground, and a rest area from which rainforest trails take you to the Pura Vida Garden.

Ingredients:

Preparation:
  • 1 ounce dark rum
  • 1/2 onz contreau
  • 1 ounce vanilla syrup
  • 2 ounce passion fruit juice
  • 1/3 ounce lemon juice

In a short glass place ice in cubes to taste, add rum, contreau  and fruit juices, stir with cocktail spoon and garnish with vanilla syrup and lemon slice. Now to enjoy!
